The 10th Annual Regatta at Lake Arthur will be held on Saturday and Sunday August 2 & 3, 2008 in Moraine State Park at the Lakeview Area on the North Shore. A new event for this year, which will be of interest to canoe paddlers in particular, is FreeStyle Canoeing.
FreeStyle Canoeing is a collection of paddling techniques which emphasizes efficiency. It combines an intimate knowledge of how a canoe wants to move in the water and the ways in which one can use and enhance those tendencies to maximum advantage, and a subtlety of paddle placement and action to produce exceptionally fluid and graceful movement. A repertoire of moves has been developed over the years, and those who do this well can make a canoe move in ways which are both amazing and beautiful to watch, and seem to do it without effort, or even with very much momentum.
On Saturday afternoon there will be an Exhibition featuring a number of National Champion FreeStylers, who will perform routines which are set to music.
On Sunday, Aug. 3, there will be an Instructional Session, at which these same folks will provide an introduction to some of the basic FreeStyle techniques. All area paddlers are invited and welcome, but this session is not for beginning paddlers. One should have a command of the common paddling strokes and be generally able to make a canoe go where you want it to go.
The Instructional Session will take place at the McDanel’s launch area in Moraine State Park at 10:30 AM There is no fee and no registration is required. Just show up. No equipment will be provided, so you must bring your own boat and paddling gear (PFDs are required on the water).
FreeStyle is not necessarily about learning to do a bunch of flashy tricks (though they’re a lot of fun in their own right). It’s about balance, efficient and effective paddling, and boat control - all of which skills serve one well on moving water. Think of it as “obedience classes for your canoe”.

More info is available at the Regatta website www.moraineregatta.com

Hi All

Four Geezrs and a Geezr Wantabee had a great time camping at Minister Creek and paddling on Tionesta Creek on Wednesday and Thursday.

We were in and out of showers on during our paddle time on Wednesday. We found a spot for lunch and it wasn't raining, but started up again just as we were beginning to enjoy our sandwiches. But it quit before we were done paddling and was nice the rest of Wednesday and Thursday.

Now I know you are expecting me to report some things that must stay in the VAULT.

We all had to look the ground over as Mr. LostMyKey thought he did it again. But we were excited when it appeared sticking to his gloves that he tossed in his boat.

Now I'll never tell who did this one, but someone thought he could dry a pair of really wet socks quicker if he past them through the flame of the hot camp fire that we all enjoyed on Wednesday evening. Guess what? That is right . He burned holes in the toes. Now wouldn't you think he would know better.

We paddled from Henry's Mills to Porkey on Wednesday and then from Porkey to below Kelletville on Thursday. While Tom and Dave were doing the shuttle, I thought I found the perfect chute to launch our boats.

The boats were all lined up ready to go when Tom and Dave got back. Well, wouldn't you know the last person to launch didn't push hard enough and well I don't think I need to tell you the end of that story. Yep it's in the vault. Really made me feel bad too because he helped me launch and I saw the rest of the story.

These Geezrs must remind all kayakers. Please, please don't go out on cold water without a wet suit. Remember the rule of thumb. If the Air temperature and Water Temperature don't total 100 degrees, you should wear a wet suit. You might not be able to find a place to get out of the water and get your clothes changed quick enough to prevent hyperthermia.

Enough for the Vault

We did see 5 Eagles and a lot of osprey, turkeys, hawks and belted kingfishers, Canada Geese and Hooded Merganzers too. Plus 4 deer. Oh, and yes the frog is still there with a new coat of paint.

Next time we'd like to find a spot farther up stream towards Barnes and maybe finish at Porkey.

Unlike French Creek, there are not many strainers on Tionesta Creek.

How could anyone be bored with retirement when you can enjoy days like our two on Tionesta Creek.

Hi everyone!

I need a little help...

Last year, I wrote a program called From Wheels
to Wellness, which is a kid's program that
introduces bicycling as a lifelong activity. The premise
of the program is to combat childhood obesity.
Because of
its goal...I received two major grants to help
me put together this half-day program in conjunction
with
the Girl Scouts in three locations: Warren County,
Mercer County and Erie County. I have solid help for
the Warren and Mercer County sites, but I am
seeking help
for the Erie County site.

The actual Erie County session will be held
from 10
a.m. until noon on Saturday, March 29th at the
Girl Scout office on Route 6N in Edinboro.

To prepare, I'd like to get together as a group
and tell you all about what's gonna happen.
SO...ON THIS
FRIDAY - MARCH 7TH AT 7 P.M., I have reserved
the front room at the Safari Bar in Meadville to
explain the program and what type of assistance I need.
I believe most of you are local experts in the
subject - cycling! We will be teaching the kids the
basics of
cycling which includes the clothing, the bike,
and actual riding on indoor trainers as a group.
I would like to have each of you come to hear
about this program and help us make a bit of history
in teaching kids about the great sport of cycling.

I'd appreciate an RSVP if you're coming,
however, if you just wanna show up...go for it. Come, have
some dinner and hear about this awesome opportunity
to make a difference in the lives of kids.

Thanks. Please forward this to any cyclists you
feel may be able to get involved! The more the
merrier! AGAIN...7 p.m. Friday, March 7 at the Safari Bar.
my cell: 337-3070

The Westside Overland Trail

We had five show up to ski the Westside Overland Trail.
Ray, Issy and two new members Mike and Jill and I skied the Trail.
The snow seem to get slower and was sticking to the ski a little as the day warmed up.
It was a nice warm day with plenty of snow. Near the lean-to we had some fun with
the hills . Their one hill you go down and have to make a ninety degree turn on to
a bridge which it a little tricky, but fun. I have never made it to the bridge, I always wipe out
before making the bridge. Then the hill going to the lean-to is always a challenge.
We met some people snowshoeing on the trail. Also something that was interesting was a man
two dogs and a sled going down the trail, the kind they use on the Iditarod.
A friend of Mike's told us a story about coyote on the trail. A man was walking on the trail with his dog.
The dog seen a couple of coyotes on the trail, and started chasing them. The coyotes lead the dog
to where their was a pack of coyotes, and the dog were killed by the coyotes
You might want to think twice before taking dogs on the trail
